1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
Paul told the Corinthians to prophesy to one another. He didn’t mean we should all be predicting the future. He explains what he means two verses later:
14:3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
Some of the best sermons that I’ve heard have been one or two minute sermons that have taken place not in a pulpit, but in casual conversation. Every believer is called to be a preacher in this way! We’re all called to speak to our brothers and sisters in the Lord for edification, exhortation and consolation. Did you know that it’s your duty to do that?
John 21:17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.
If you love the Lord with all of your heart you will feed His sheep. Feed them with words of encouragement, wisdom, comfort, urging them to press into the Lord. Edify them, exhort them, and console them. This is what it means to prophesy in the new covenant.
