John 8:6 - Private meditation in the midst of public chaos
"This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not." (Joh 8:6)

One day our Lord Jesus was surrounded by a chaotic mess of people. Every one of them was attempting to get His attention, and all He did was stoop down to write on the ground. He just kept on writing and nothing was going to interrupt Him despite the turmoil around him. We know He wasn’t drawing random pictures… scripture says that He was writing, which means that He was thinking... deeply. His deep thought wasn’t affected by the mess around Him, and He just kept on writing. We can only guess at what He wrote. But one thing we can do is realize that in the midst of turmoil we can have a quiet private time. We can be in meditation or prayer to God. Nobody else needs to know what we’re saying or thinking – just ourselves and God.

Sometimes during our days we need to do our own personal Sabbath rests. It doesn’t matter what’s going on around us. Do you think that the peace the Lord had during His time in prayer on the mountain with God was any different than the peace He had when He was getting spat on by the Pharisees or tossed around in a ship on the water? It wasn’t… the peace that God gives is perfect and is for easy times as well as difficult, quiet times as well as loud. Jesus was always able to have His private time with God no matter what was happening around Him. Sometimes we need to do what God tells us to do in Psalm 46, "Be still, and know that I am God!..." (Psa 46:10).

If you want to be like Jesus, then you too should meditate on the things of God often and pray in short spurts throughout the day, whether you’re alone, or surrounded by noise and disarray. Take that time to spend alone with your Father in Heaven, meditating on the things of God and listening to what He is saying. It doesn’t matter if you’re at work, around friends, or around enemies. A harsh, demanding day at work, a stressful day at school, yelling and fighting at home… it doesn’t matter what the pandemonium is, even in the midst of this you can take time to think good, godly thoughts, give God thanks, present your requests to Him, and tell Him how you’re feeling. Write it down on the ground in the dirt if you’d like! No matter what’s going on around you, it is God’s will that you have a spiritual peace like the Lord Jesus had. He will give it to you if you ask for it, and it comes only from His Holy Spirit.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Phi 4:6-7)
