If Satan can’t convince you to doubt of God’s love and mercy in Jesus Christ, he’ll attempt to make you doubt of His very existence. The evidences that the Lord of the bible not only exists, but is the one and only true God are a great encouragement to us as His children. Those evidences spit in the face of the scoffers and mockers. They strengthen our faith and give us tools for evangelism.
Below are several undeniable facts which prove the existence of God:
Creation
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the expanse proclaims His handiwork.” - (Psa 19:1)
Creation itself testifies that there is an intelligent creator. The fact that there is design implies that there is a designer. The bible says that you can look into the heavens and see the handiwork of God! When you look into that night sky in all its vastness, you are seeing a glimpse of the glory of our Lord. Yes, the vastness of creation testifies not only that our God does exist, but that He is awesome, majestic and powerful beyond comprehension.
It is absurd to me that a person can find an arrowhead in a field and jump to the conclusion that it was created by early man, and then find a fossil next to it (a billion times more functional and complex) and say that it came about by chance! It is simple, plain, common sense to see that creation implies a creator, and design implies a designer. No person would ever look at the Mona Lisa and say that some paint flew on a canvas in a storm a few hundred million years ago. Even if a person had never heard of “Leonardo Da vinci”, he or she must admit that some intelligent and gifted being spent time creating it! The same is true with creation, and life itself.
Yet we must not accuse evolutionists or atheists to be stupid or ignorant. There have been plenty of highly intelligent people on both sides of the debate. You ask how any intelligent person can overlook the plain fact that design implies a designer? In short, pride has caused this blindness, and God has not removed the scales from their eyes, yet. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the understanding of the perceiving ones." - (1Co 1:19). Be patient with the scoffers and unbelievers. If it wasn’t for the grace of the Lord, you would also be unable to see what is plain to the regenerated soul.
The origin of life
The complexity of the simplest life on earth is astounding. An evolutionist can attempt to argue all day about mutation from one species to another, but he or she cannot even guess at the origin of life. How can complex life evolving from chance be true if there is no way for it to even start in the first place? It's equivalent to a person claiming that a Honda Civic that's driving down the road does not have a starter or an ignition, but at the same time offering no explanation as to how the engine ever got started in the first place!
If you ever hear an evolutionist use the term ‘simple cell’, he is already lying to you. There is no such thing as a simple cell. The thought that life could spawn from random occurrences of nature is comparable to throwing a dictionary through a shredder, dropping the paper shreddings from an airplane and observing the shreddings assemble themselves on the ground in their original form! In other words, it’s just not going to happen. The simplest cell on earth is more complex than a supercomputer. There are only two possibilities – first, that there was a creator. Or two, that a living cell was able to spontaneously generate from random matter - the wind, rain and other natural forces happened to spawn a living cell which could grow, burn energy, feed off of its outside material and reproduce itself. I’ll tell you, to believe that takes mountains more faith than to believe in God! Man will believe anything as long as it's not in the bible. Yes, even atheists base their belief on faith. An intelligent creator is the only reasonable explanation for the origin of life.
The Holy Spirit
Perhaps the most obvious reason for me to know that God exists is that I’ve met Him! Every Christian has fellowship with God through the Holy Spirit. We talk to Him and He talks to us. The Lord put His Holy Spirit inside His children – the Holy Spirit is the means by which we have fellowship with our Father in Heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ.
“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (Gal 4:6)
I have a brother who is two years younger than me. A person can come up to me and try to convince me that he doesn’t exist, but no matter how elegant his arguments are it’s not going to happen. There’s no way to in a million years to convince me that my brother doesn’t exist. Why? Because I know my brother! I grew up with him, I spend time with him, I love him, and I know him well. Any person that tries to convince me that my brother doesn’t exist is going to get about as far in his or her convincing as I can throw a car! Any person who tries to convince me that God doesn’t exist is more likely to get my pity than my attention.
Millions of people make the claim that they have sought God, but gave up because they found nothing. What about these people? What about the ones who claim to have sought but not found, and knocked only to have no door opened?
There is a true story of a man who went to the beach one day to seek God. He shouted to the sky, “God if you’re real reveal yourself to me!” He waited for a brief period. He heard and saw nothing. From then on he referred to that day as the day he discovered that God didn’t exist. Was he right? This is not the story of an atheist who one day discovered that God didn’t exist… this is the story of a spoiled brat who did not get his way. He was looking for God his way. The thing is, when we seek the Lord we have to come to Him on His terms, then we have His promise that we will find Him. Do not go to the God of the universe demanding a sign… you will not receive one. But if you come to Him with a humble heart on His terms, He will reveal Himself to you and you will meet Him!
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." (Mat 7:7-8)
Our hearts and our conscience
The Lord has written on the hearts of every man several pieces of knowledge: knowledge of an eternal existence, knowledge of a creator, and knowledge of His moral character. These all have been inherent in mankind throughout history and prove His existence.
“He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.” (Eccl. 3:11, NASB)
“Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another” (Rom 2:15)
Miracles, Prophecies and Inerrancy of the bible
Have you or anybody you know ever witnessed God work in a supernatural way? Many believers have, or know other brothers and sisters in the Lord that have had such experiences. Have you prayed great things and seen the Lord provide the answer in an amazing way? These are visible evidences that prove the existence of God. Others may shrug these off as coincidence or try to explain them with some fanatical reasoning, but we know better!
The fulfilled prophecies in the bible also testify to the existence and power of its Author. The dead sea scrolls were found in the mid 1900’s and dated to before the time of Christ. The book of Isaiah was found among them. Included in Isaiah (chapter 53) is a very detailed description of certain details of the life and death of our Lord Jesus. These were written before our Lord walked the earth and was crucified.
Did you know that the bible tells that the earth was round when men still believed that it was flat? Here is the verse:
"It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in…" (Isa 40:22)
You see, even the phrasing in the bible is inspired!
These are just a couple (out of many) examples of prophecies and facts that have been perfectly fulfilled and shown to be true that the bible testified to before they were observed. This argument doesn't only prove the existence of God, but proves the fact that the God of the bible is the one and only true God.
"Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him." (Deu 4:35)
